Memo to Lobo Unit Company Commanders on the Arrival of Japanese Mine Prospectors, March 1943

The Lobo Unit, USAFFE Guerrilla was originally considered by the United States army as part of the Pandita Area, DI Combat, Free Luzon Area, 6th Military District guerrilla outfit under the command of one Danny Flores. The mother organization was not favorably considered for recognition by the United States Army. In this page is a transcription1 of a memorandum issued by one Capt. Soliman, the Acting Battalion Executive Officer and Company “A” Commander, announcing the arrival in Lobo of four boats believed to be mining prospectors.

1. As per report received from the Battalion S-2 that there arrived in the pier four motor boats with Japanese civilians and soldiers.
2. As per information received, these civilians are mine prospectors for one Jap being recognized to be Waki, a long resident of Batangas before the war had been a mine prospector in Lobo with Mr. Lecaroz.
3. That they will ask the favor of the Mayor if they can use the civilians as laborers and that the Mayor doesn’t understand that we are guerrillas and that if the Mayor would ask the help in the mining operations, you must notify this Hq if you are requested to be one of the laborers.
4. Tell your S-2 to be on the alert in giving us information of how many Jap miners arrived and their destinations and when they will begin to operate the operations.
5. Assign men to be on the espionage work and permit him to be a laborer so as to have better information of what is going on [in] the mining camp.
6. Advise them to be very clever and silent if they become workers and that they must not forget that they are there for espionage work for our Unit.
7. Give them instructions that while working in the said mining camp, they must try to get some articles or any materials when obtained would be a hindrance to the rapid operation of the machine to be installed in that camp.
8. Prompt action is so strictly desired by this Hq.
