Documents Submitted to the US Army by the San Jose Guerrillas

The San Jose Guerrilla Unit was an underground organization that opposed the Japanese in the Province of Batangas in World War II. It was commanded by one Pedro Kalalo and was officially recognized with 60 men as an element of the Philippine Army in the service of the United States Armed Forces during the liberation of the country. In this page1 are various documents submitted to the Guerrilla Affairs Branch of the US Armed Forces in the Western Pacific in support of the San Jose Guerrilla Unit’s application for official recognition.

COMPANY “B”
511th Parachute Infantry

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

The San Jose Guerrilla Unit was attached to my command for a period of a month. In that time, they helped my unit to the fullest of their powers and did satisfactorily patrolling at all times. Their reports of enemy activity at that time were fairly accurate and in many cases helped us locate the enemy. This unit has well disciplined soldiers and obeyed my command at all times. [The following line was handwritten.] The unit was very grateful to us for obtaining daily rations for the men. I request any other unit to do the same if it is at all possible.

1. It is evident that this unit is doing an excellent job of intelligence. I wish to take this opportunity to commend this unit very highly for the excellent reports received and express the hope that it will continue the excellent work.

2. No unit can be attached until their sector and area has been freed from Japs. At that time, we can attach only that number for which we can furnish weapons which will be but a small number.
